Pollution closely watched

Kurashiki, the Japanese sister city of Christchurch, | had industrial pollution monitoring “down to a fine art,’’ the Mayor (Mr H. G. i Hay) told the Christchurch City Council’s health and general committee on Thursday.

He said the computerised monitoring centre was so sophisticated that controllers could tell which factory was emitting too much pollution at any given time. Then the factory could be warned to stop.

When the discussion turned to problems in getting rid of smoky open fires in Christchurch, Mr Hay had more information from his recent trip to Japan and China. Cr V. S. Buck asked if it were possible to have a nonpolluting fuel which could be used in existing open fires. “What is really needed is a smokeless fuel that can be burned in open fires—a form of coal, such as I saw in every house that I visited in China.” Mr Hay said.
