Watersiders set record

j (N.Z Press Association) TAURANGA, Nov. 28. Watersiders at the port of lauranga have set what is believed to be a national record for unloading a bulk cargo by conventional Imeans. Watersiders unloaded 10,500 tonnes of bulk salt from Bellmes on to trucks using the ship's five cranes, grabs, and hoppers. A spokesman for the ship’s agents and stevedores, Mount Maunganui and Tauranga Stevedores, Ltd, said that 31 men worked in each shift and the record tonnage was achieved in 15 hours. The spokesman said that the previous bulk tonnage record for the port and New Zealand was about 9000 tonnes, also with a salt cargo discharged from a sister ship of the Bellmes.
