Harbour stall restrict hours
About 280 employees of the Lyttelton Harbour Board will work restricted hours from December 1. after a fourth breakdown in national conciliation talks.
The men voted at a stopwork meeting to accept a recommendation from the national executive of the Harbour Board Employees’ Union. They will refuse to work between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. (from Monday to Friday, and ;will provide only essential ■services at the port during week-ends and public holidays. the move came after the (union’s assessors withdrew iftom conciliation talks in Auckland last Friday. It was (the fourth unsuccessful conciliation meeting within a few months. The ban had been imposed in support of several claims, the secretary of the Lyttelton branch of the union. Mr W. E. Wildey, said last even- . ing. These included higher .‘wages, a 5.1 per cent allow-] ance for indentured trades-' men. and holiday relativity; with other waterfront ■workers’ unions.
■ The meeting had voted overwhelmingly in favour of (industrial action. Mr Wildey I said. I He said that the union would now lodge fresh claims with the Harbours Association.
