Strong softball team for Army match
One of Canterbury’s strongest senior men’s softball teams in recent years was announced last evening by the selectors (Messrs lan: Pollock, Arnie Hall and Brian Mansfield) to compete against the New Zealand Army at Burnham on Sunday.
The same players will also contest the South Island tournament for the Jeffries Cup at Dunedin on December 6 and 7.
"I have high hopes for the team,” Mr Pollock, who is the coach, said last evening. **lt is an experienced side and should do well.”
Only two players have not previously played for Canterbury, Chris McDonald and Mark McFarlane. McDonald, who will play in the left outfield, comes from Southland and is in his first season in Christchurch. A former New Zealand representative, he is expected to strengthen the provincial side considerably.
McFarlane, who will probably play in the centrefield.
previously represented Waikato. He joins his brother, Paul McFarlane, who is a former New Zealand player.
j One of the features of the I team is that three pitchers 'have been chosen — Geoff I Roberts, Dave Bradbury and I Murray Reid. However, Bradibury will almost certainly be I the No. 1 man for this position. One leading player not included in the team is the New
Zealand trialist, Brian Mountford. He has not yet recovered from a knee injury.
The team for the New Zealand championship tournament at Queen Elizabeth IT Park in the Christmas-New Year period will be named immediately after the South Island tournament.
A captain has not yet been named.
One of the catchers, Gordon Phillips (Papanui) was not in the original squad of 17 because he began the season late. The team is:—
G. Roberts, D. Bradbury, M. Reid, G. Phillips, G. Panagiotidis. D. Eagar, B. Chee, C. Chee, P. McFarlane. C. McDonald, D. Daw, M. McFarlane, D. Rae, D. Chee.
