Show tournament upsets

If the object of the Show Week-end tournament is to provide leading players with as much tennis as possible, then the 1975 contest, which ended at Wilding Park yesterday, must he considered a pronounced success.

The tournament ran over schedule because the two- ■ lifers were beaten in three of the four finals. This led to the playing of three “super” finals, in all of which earlier results were reversed. Christine Newton was the only player to win two titles, and' she was also the only 'contestant to come through lan event with two lives in- . tact. ! !n the women’s singles : final she convincingly beat (the leading Canterbury junior, Sally Chapman, and she! learned with Robyn Hunt to - take the doubles. Canterbury’s top man, ! Warren Edgecumbe, had a rare reverse before retaining : his men’s singles title. Beaten only once in senior inter-club

play last season, Edgecumbe succumbed to a furious late charge by the national under--17 champion. Michael Mooney.

Down 36-39, Mooney unleashed his fast, swinging first service and followed into the net to volley winners. He won five consecutive points on his service to take the match, 41-39. Edgecumbe, now down to one life, did not give his youthful opponent the chance to repeat his achievement. His shrewd placements and economy of effort carried him through.

It was, however, a memorable tournament for Mooney. because earlier in the singles he beat the junior with the growing renutation, Stephen Harley, and a Canterbury Wilding Shield player, Peter Hampton. In a match which featured Ifour nationally-ranked players. Judith Phillips and Shelly Monds beat the previously unbeaten Miss Newton and Mrs Hunt in the first final of the women’s doubles. But with firm shots and far fewer errors, Miss Newton

and Mrs Hunt prevailed in the second match, winning with something in reserve.
