No comment on monk’s allegations
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 14. A senior police spokesman today declined to comment on an allegation by the Ananda Marga monk, Mr Martin Tobias, I of police harassment. Mr Tobias, who has been ordered to leave New Zealand by next Tuesday, said the police had been hounding him for the last month. He alleged a policeman following him around New Zealand was Detective Sergeant G. Sawyer, a brother of Constable N. A. Sawyer, who was kidnapped at gunpoint by members of the Ananda Marga group at Horokiwi on October 3. Detective Superintendent S. McEwen said today that he was not prepared to discuss the merits of the group or its complaints through the news media.
However, he gave an assurance that any written complaints made by the group to the police would be fully investigated.
