Tourists spend well in Aust.
(N.Z Press Association) SYDNEY, November 7. New Zealanders visiting Australia spent an average of $9 a day (not counting accommodation), more than Italians, Dutchmen. Germans. and the British, but less than Americans, Japanese, Canadians, and Swiss. The Australian Tourist Commission says that the Japanese are top of the spending list ($lB a day), after Americans ($l7), Canadians and Swiss ($11), New Zealanders ($9), Frenchmen ($8), Germans ($7), British and Dutch ($5), and Italians ($4l The average New Zealan'-rj stays for 30 days, below the average for most of the other countries. Sydney is clearly the most popular destination, attracting more than twice as manv visitors as Melbourne, which in turn attracts twice as many as Brisbane or Canberra.
There are indications, however. that New Zealand tourist numbers are not increasing tn anywhere near such large numbers this year, because of the tighter! economy and the New Zealand devaluation.
