Melee in Square

Three men were arrested after a melee in front of “The Press” building in Cathedral Square about 4,30 p.m. yesterday. A crowd gathered as the men and policemen exchanged blows. Some of the onlookers had been drinking in a nearby hotel, and it looked for a minute that the six police-1 men on the scene would have I more trouble on their hands. The trouble broke out when the police were escorting a man from the. hotel. He began to struggle, and the police had to force him into a police car. Other persons standing by became abusive, and when the policemen asked them to move on a melee developed.

It lasted about 15 minutes. Two of the men were put bleeding into a police van. The third remained in the car.

The back window of the car was spattered with blood. The men will appear in the Magistrate’s Court this morning on various charges stemming from the incident.
