Parish’s 125th year

The 125th anniversary of the settlement of the port of Lyttelton, and the establishment of the church there, will be celebrated on December 13 and 14. All denomina--13 and blous em 1232 tions will take part. A celebration ball will be held in the Harbour Board Hal! on December 13. Tickets will be available from Mr I. Ross, telephone 288796. On December 14, services will be held in various churches. The Anglican Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev W. A. Pyatt) will preach at the Holy Trinity 1 Anglican Church. Later that morning there will be a walk over the Bridle Path to the Heathcote' Domain for a picnic lunch. The band of the Second Battalion of the Marlborough. Nelson and West Coast Regiment will lead the walkers to the start of the Bridle Path. It is hoped that, as they walk back to Lyttelton, they will join those on the Lyttelton Borough walk from Ferrymead to Lyttelton. At 4 p.m. an open air service of thanksgiving will be held on the recreational ground at the Lyttelton Memorial Clock. It will be an interdenominational, civic; service, and the Sydenham Salvation Army Band will] play. Senior citizens will also. be able to attend a garden party on the lawns of the Holy Trinity Church. From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. there will be carol singing around Lyttelton. People will gather at the Timeball Tower and walk through Lyttelton, stopping to sing carols. They will finish at the Holy Trinity Church. The convener of the celebrations (Mr I. Ross) said it was hoped about 500 people would be in the group at the end. During the celebrations it is hoped people will visit the Lyttelton Museum, the open air swimming pool, and the Ferrymead Transport Museum. To coincide with the celebrations, Captain J. Cleaver of the Lyttelton Anglican parish has compiled “The Story of a Pilgrim Parish,"

which gives a history of the Holv Trinity Anglican Church, and of the Lyttelton Anglican parish. The history contains a detailed description of the main features of the Holy Trinity Church, such as the bell which was brought to New Zealand by pilgrims in 1850. A list of historic documents displayed in the | church, is also included.
