Trampers flown to hospital
Three women. suffer-i ing from mild exposure were flown out of the Craigieburn Range, near Arthur's Pass, yesterday in a Royal New Zealand Air Force helicopter.
Nine other trampers are spending the night in a hut in the area, which is being lashed by snow, sleet, and rain.
j The women were flown to Hagley Park, and taken by St John Ambulance to Christchurch Hospital shortly after 6 p.m. They were later discharged. They are Juliana Glubb, of 164 Northcote Road, Northcote; Susan Small, of 76 Aidwins Road, Linwood; and Lynette Commons, of 18 Delaware Crescent, Russley. The women were with a
I party of 12 from the Roman Catholic Tramping Club, of Christchurch, and were * spending the week-end tn the I range. I About 2 p.m. yesterday the (group reported to the Mountain Radio Service’s listening post in Christchurch that they were caught in heavy snow, and the three could not travel any further. The Iroquois helicopter left Wigram about 4.30 p.m. to collect the sick trampers. It landed in a clearing, near where the trampers were sheltering. A police spokesman said that when the helicopter left the area the trampers were about three miles from the Lagoon Hut, where they were to spend the night. They are expected to complete the five-hour walk to Arthur’s Pass today.
