Change 'will cost millions'
NEW PLYMOUTH. October 23. Changing the name of Mount Egmont would cost the tourist industry millions of dollars, the owner of the Devon Motor Lodge in New Plymouth. Mr R. W. Tennent, said today. "Much of our overseas promotion has centred on Mount Egmont, and it will be for nothing if the name is changed,” Mr Tennent said.
i To many overseas people, New Plymouth or Taranaki did not mean anything, but most had heard of Egmont A change would mean the expense of promoting the different, name.
Mr Tennent, who has just returned from a tour of travel agencies in the United States, said that Mount Egmont was a recognised feature of New Zealand. He had been surprised by the number of tourist agencies which featured pictures of the mountain. Mr Tennent said he had discussed the matter with the Minister of Maori Affairs (Mr Rata), and the Minister had asked him to obtain, backing for his claims. Mr Tennent said he would be having discussions with the Taranaki Promotion Association on the proposed change.
