Emergency services in demand

The accident and emergency department at the Christchurch Hospital treated 194 people a day, or 24 an hour, during September. The North Canterbury Hospital Board said yesterday that 5797 people were treated by the department during September. Mr M. R. Good said that the staff was still coping well despite the pressure. Bed occupancy rates in Christchurch, Princess Margaret and Burwood hospitals had dropped slightly, although there was still a 94 per cent occupancy rate at Princess Margaret Hospital. Mr Good said that members of the institutions committee were now being supplied W'ith daily graphs of bed occupancy, whijh gave a much more accurate picture of the situation.
