Insurance company retrenches

The Dunedin branch of the (Monarch Insurance Company ■of New Zealand, Ltd, will cease trading as a full under- ( writing branch, and will (become a service branch from (the end of November. The company’s Dunedin business (will be handled by its Christchurch office. Six of the Dunedin staff (have been given notice, two (have been transferred to IChristchurch, and two others (who resigned, and are moving (to Christchurch, have been (offered jobs there. The assistant manager in Dunedin (Mr J. Maltby) said ■today that the move was being made “basically to cut (costs. It was a question of 'maintaining an adequate profitability.” Staff who had been given i notice would be given redundancy payments based on length of service, he said. Four staff members and a! life insurance salesman would remain in Dunedin. Motor-racing.— John McCormack in an Elfin MR6 won the fourth round of the Australian Gold Star Formula One championship at Calder Park yesterday. The win puts McCormack at the top of the championship table on 21 points with one round to go.
