Australian shares firm in moderate trading
Shares prices continued to move firmly ahead in moderately active trading on the Australian stock exchanges yesterday, in the wake of Tuesday’s slight rally.
B.H.P. improved 8c at 708 c, while E.Z. Industries rose 10c at 295 c. Boral, ICI, Lend Lease, C.U.8., Coles and Amatil were also among the industrial shares which made gains. Philip Morris was at its best level for the year, while CSR, which was ex rights on Tuesday, gained 13c at 405 c. The speculative interest in energy .shares, which initiated market confidence on Tuesday, continued yesterday. Utah rose 70c to 970 c, and Pancontinental 30c to 650 c — its highest level for the year. A.A.R.. Thiess, Woodside-Burmah, Ocean Resources. Coal and Allied, Kathleen and Queensland Mines also improved.
Peko-Wallsend rose 10c to 410 c, and M.I.M. gained 2c at 212 c, despite cutting its copper price by $2O to $940 a tonne.
Consolidated Gold remained steady at 260 c, in : spite of a forecast of a difficult year ahead, while C.R.A., Emperor. Gollins. Oakbndge ! and Hamersley rose.
