Scientists for Indonesia
Three Department of Scientific and Industrial Research scientists will start work in Indonesia under New Zealand’s overseas aid programme This month they are to help develop geothermal resources for generating electricity. The senior member is Mr J. Healy, who, until last month, was with the Geological Survey in Rotorua. A research scientist and volcanologist of international repute, Mr Healy has undertaken
various assignments' overseas for the United Nations. With Mr Healy will be Mr I. Naim, district geologist, of the Geological Survey, Rotorua, and Mr W. A. J. Mahon, a geochemist, of the D.5.1.R., Wairakei. Mr Nairn began his career as an advisory officer i with the Ministry of
Works in 1965. He transferred to D.S.I.R. in 1971. Most of his time with the department has been spent in the Rotorua area. Mr Mahon joined the chemistry division in 1958. In 1966 he was granted a national research fellow-
ship to do 15 months’ post-graduate studies in Germany. He has been on geothermal projects in Chile in 1969, and Indonesia in 1972 and 1974.
