Europium fast in trial for Trentham

Europium, the South Island’s only runner in the Wainui Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, showed sharp speed in training at Riccarton yesterday.

In the hands of her race rider, Michael Mein, Europium hurried over 1400 m on the plough in 1:28.8 after cutting out the opening 800 m in 49.7. Europium started in a gap behind Regal Ration but was upsides with her stablemate

before they reached the straight. Regal Ration, an acceptor for the feature race at the Geraldine meeting, took 1:31.4 for his 1400 m. Beau Trie, Audaciter, Ribildo, and Joint Effort, other Riccarton hopefuls for the first leg of the Geraldine double, all performed to good purpose in their trials on the plough, which gave excellent footing. Beau Trie and Audaciter dashed in from the 1400 m in 1:27.2, the last 600 in 36.4. . Ribaldo and Joint Effort followed over the same ground in 1:28.3, the last 600 in 36.9.
