CRANE GOES UP

A white climbing crane has started to grow on the new C.M.L. Building site in Cathedral Square. Later this week it should have lifted itself above the tops of nearby buildings, where it can swing freely in the wind.

Eventually, the crane will be 140 ft high. It is able to rise about 20ft an hour. Working in the confined space, crane construction workers waited until the week-end to put up the crane’s first stages be-

cause part of the structure had to be rested in the street before it was lifted. An air compressor hanging from the jib is used as a weight until the crane is ready for use.
