Rolleston
Sir, — Criticism on regional grounds, of the Rolleston new town, to my mind misses the point. Even the most conservative estimates indicate that the population of Christchurch will grow by some 100,000 to 150,000 people over the next 20 to 30 years. We are already seeing some of the consequences of this continuing growth in and around the periphery of our city. The Regional Planning Authority has already warned of the possible need for urban motorways should jobs in the city centre rise much above 60,000; housing is threatening the airport: drainage is becoming a problem on the Port Hills, good soil to the south of the city is just being protected; sound houses and mature trees are being removed for flats and the price of sections has reached a scandalous level and are now the highest in the country in spite of low development costs. I would ask the critics of Rolleston where they would put the future population of Christchurch without destroying the very environment that currently makes the city an attractive place to live? — Yours, etc., LAND.
