Easy track would suit Andrew at Waipukurau

("The Press" Special Service) HASTINGS.

. The state of the track [at Waipukurau today 'will determine the chances of many horses.

The rain that, fell at the weekend will have left enough moisture to make the track easy, I and perhaps soft, but such conditions will not worry Andrew in the first leg of the Waipukurau Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double. Nor will the likes of Hunting Chief. Guardian, Marehello, Wellineas and Advent Tor be put out by it. Along with Elsthorpe. Frisky Fred, Sind and Carderial they lend to the evenness of the field in the P. F. Wall Memorial Handicap.

Hopes for a Hawke’s Bay victory rest with Andrew and Elsthorpe. Neither of the other Hastings-trained candidates — Falsetto, which is in the early stages of a swing campaign, and Meduno - o any show.

On the ■ jth of his seventh in the ght-for-age Captain Cook Stakes at Trentham and his follow-up fourth at Otaki last week, Andrew should be favourite.

A fast pace on a hard ground contributed to his defeat at Otaki but he still fought on well, not too far behind Sub Indian, at the finish of 2000 m.

( Andrew has not won in open I class, but he has half a dozen or so good efforts to his credit and. perhaps, with the right break in some of those races, he could have won by now. GALLOPING WELL Whether Elsthorpe can manage 2100 m successfully on a soft track at this stage of his campaign is a moot point.' But a couple of good track gallops over the last week and another on Sunday have been ample testimony to his well-being. In spite of his age, Marebello continues to race well and it :was the firmness of the ground at Otaki, more than anything else, that resulted in his failure! Isat week. Before that, on soft ground, Marebello had run third at Marton and second to Frisky Fred at Hastings. What favour the Sobig mare,, Sind, held early in the season; ,has been lost. Her last failure: iwas at Trentham on September; 27. However, this will be as [good a chance as she will ever l have to strike form. A better prospect among those a little lower in the weights is the six-year-old, Advent Tor. which, until beaten when favourite in his open-handicap debut at Marton about two weeks ago, had raced consistently and with the potential of one that will go a good way further. Cardenal. which won narrowly at Wanganui four starts back

(then ran second over 1600 m at [Trentham, should be the best of the others, though this will be his first attempt in this class. SECOND LEG The Arlingon Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double, is not overtaxed with form candidates and, in fact, only three horses — Enaved, Unna Qwayiss and Gold Clock — have paid dividends reeling on the flat this season. Naturally, they have fair claim Ito be the favourites; and after his handy efforts in better class. jGold Clock should win. ! Since running a good second I to March Legend at Hastings last t month Gold Clock has missed at (Hastings and Trentham. On this : campaign he has looked disappointing at times but he will ;not get a better opportunity of I winning than in this field. ’ The easy track will suit : Enaved which has drawn well. [ .He has had a couple of weeks to recover and freshen after bls' i first-up second behind Match-! [maker over 1400 m at Marton. The best of the others should■ be Dark Court and Magnify.! while improvement can be expected any time from Dark Sovereign. Selections:—
