TV2 project 'formidable ’
(N.Z. Press Assn —Copyright) SYDNEY, October 6. New Zealand’s decision to establish a second television channel at a cost of ss4m over five years was a most ambitious and difficult project, the DirectorGeneral of the 8.8. C. (Sir Charles Curran) said at an airport news conference in Sydney today after a sixday visit to New Zealand, where he discussed the project with broadcasting authorities. Sir Charles said that although he congratulated New Zealand on its initiative, he saw the project facing considerable
problems, primarily because of cost. New Zealand was a country of only 3m people, and when it was realised that the total revenue for the N.Z.B.C. in the last financial year was only s2Bm, the second-channel plan and its cost posed a “formidable target, to say the least.” Sir Charles said the problem New Zealand broadcasting faced was not a structural one — simply one of money. Sir Charles is in Australia to address the Commonwealth Education Broadcasting Conference, which will begin in Sydney tomorrow.
