Curb likely on farming of mussels
(N.Z. Press Association! NELSON, Oct. 5. A brake has been applied to commercial mussel farming in the Marlborough Sounds. Before the Sounds Park Board meeting in Nelson yesterday were 42 applications, all of which were deferred. The board decided that no further marine-farming licences would be granted until a common policy had been formulated by the local authorities concerned. Successful commercial ventures have already been established in the Sounds, the spat being established on lines suspended from moored rafts or drums. The board has adopted a recommendation from its executive committee that a meeting be arranged with the Marlborough Harbour Board and the Marlborough County Council to iron out the problem of dealing with such applications. Mr W. G. Parkes said the board should regard mussel farming with extreme caution in light of overseas experience. “The whole of the Sounds could be crowded with these mussel rafts unless we are careful..” he said.
