Plot against Hirohito in N.Y. reported
NEW October 6. I wo Chinese Americans are due to appear in court in New York today after a raid on their Brooklyn apartment reported to he linked to a plot to kill Emperor I lirohilo of Japan, who is visiting the city.
Among groups seen as potential threats to him are World War II veterans with a grudge against the Japanese and the extremist Japanese Red Army.
The Secret Service says that the raid on the Brooklyn apartment came after a lead from the F. 8.1. Semi-auto-matic rifles and a rapidfire pistol were among the arms found there.
The pair, a man and a ■ woman, were arrested on Saturday after the secret ' service found a kinall [armoury tn their home. Tney ; face charges of illegal possession of weapons. The Secret Service, which guards dignitaries in the United States, would not comment on newspaper reports linking the raid to their protection of the Emperor. Other V.l.P.’s under Secret Service protection in the New York area over the week-end were President Ford — the target of two assassination attempts in California last month — Prince Sihanouk of
Cambodia and King Olav of Norway.
American and Japanese agents guarding the Emperor during his United States tour have imposed extremely tight security precautions. Questioned about the arrests of Kenneth Chin, aged 27, and Elizabeth Young, aged 30, the Imperial spokesman. Ambassador, Mr Naraichi Fujiiama. said: “We cannot confirm the I incident was related to the Emperor’s visit and we still [have full confidence in the security of the United States Government.” He said he did not think ithe Emperor knew about the arrests. Yesterday, the Emperor's engagements began with a talk with King Olav. a fellow guest at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, who is on a private ; visit to the United States Then the Imperial couple were entertained to morning tea and lunch by the Rockefeller family. Emperor Hirohito concludes the New York leg of his two-week United States visit today with a tour of the United Nations, conducted by the Secretary-General (Dr Kurt Waldhejm), and a meet ing with the Mayor of New York, Mr Abraham Beame
