Beef move 'window dressing’
“I do not think it means anything,” said the chairman of the Meat Board (Mr C. Hilgendorf) at the weekend, commenting on a report from Brussels that the executive commission of the European Economic Community would relax its policy on the importation of beef from outside countries.
About three months ago, said Mr Hilgendorf, a system had been introduced under which someone in the community able to export a quantity of beef outside the community could import an equal quantity. “We thought that this was purely window dressing, and that any trade done under this provision would be very small.” Mr Hilgendorf said. It was an effort to quieten exporting countries, which had been vociferous in their complaints. Referring to the latest E.E.C. pronouncement that it would now be possible to import from outside the community double the quantity exported, Mr Hilgendorf said it was still considered “a window-dressing operation” to pacify the many exporting countries, including Eastern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
