Candidates for vacancies
Wellington-Diamond United, a crushing. 7-1, winner over Manurewa. and Rangers, a 3-1 conqueror of Wellington City, at the week-end. are now the prime candidates for the vacant place in next season's Rothmans National Soccer League.
The major clash of the, promotion-relegation series ] will be at English Park next Saturday when Rangers and! W.D.U. meet. The Wellington side won their first-] ; round match 1-0. The unbeaten W.D.U. has ifive points from its first] (three matches and Rangers I have three. Adapting its play far better to the conditions and j gaining a dominance in the ] mid-field. Rangers generally had much the better of their match with Wellington City I at Rugby League Park. Rangers opened the scor-, ing after 25 minutes when Steve Wellford took advantage of a costly City mistake in defence, raced through the open space, and slid the ball into the net off the left-hand post. Another City defensive .error gave Rangers their I second goal in first half injury time. Roger Swannell | carelessly gave away possession and from the wing cross Tony Lyte put the ball into his own goal. City produced more positive play in the second half, with the help of the southerly wind, and after 13 minutes Colin McDonald ran on to a blocked shot by Jimmy Richardson and drove high 'into the net. This was the crisis point' : for Rangers as City threw ] everything into attack, but I the Christchurch club’s! defence kept cool, weathered the storm, and the match was clinched in the eightyfirst minute when Colin At-1 tridge scored after a corner by Tom Randles. CASHMERE WINS By an aggregate of 6-1, Cashmere Wanderers has easih qualified for the first division of the Broadlands Southern Leagu, Cashmere and North End Dunedin, earned the right to meeting in the play-off seriethrough the sectional qualifying competitions. Ca-hmere won the first Ice. 3-1, at Dunedin, and then consolidated Its lead with a 3-0 victory in Christchurch on Saturday in the return match.
