X-rays at airport

X-ray equipment to screen passengers’ baggage will be installed at Christchurch Airport by next Thursday. The Christchurch City Council’s public utilities committee was told yesterday that this was to meet an October 9 deadline set by American civil aviation authorities for the screening of passengers on all flights going to the United States. The airport director (Mr R. C. Buchanan) said that the arrival and departure lounges were already being extended to handle the new equipment. Mr Buchanan also told the committee that the airport security force was now at full strength and that new recruits were at present receiving comprehensive training.
