Success for Monk

Garry Monk last week enjoyed the most important success of his three-year cycling career when he won the Manawatu colts’ tour around Palmerston North. Monk w'as fifth in the first stage, broke away with lan Richards (Auckland) for victory in the second stage, broke the time trial record in the third stage and was third in the final stage. Another Canterbury rider, Jim Tabak, was third overall.

It 's not widely known that Monk competes as successfully -as he does with the very considerable disadvantage of two steel pins in his hips — the result of a primary school accident which put an end to a most promising Rugby career.

Forced to abandon contact sports. Monk turned to cycling with almost immediate success, was near the back marks in his second season, last year, and is now an established member off scratch marks.
