Assurance on bugging sought

The president of the UniI versity of Canterbury j Students’ Association (Mr P. , F. Dunne) said that he had \ spoken to the editor of the > “New Zealand Law Journal” , (Mr Jeremy Pope) about the , submissions Mr Pope made 'to the Statutes Revision j Committee about bugging. • During the hearing, Mr ■ Pope asserted that the S.I.S. i had listened to the conversa- ; tions of students in Christchurch. Mr Dunne said that he now believed that the cases referred to by Mr Pope had taken place some time ago, before the cancellation of the Springbok tour. He considered that there was sufficient circumstantial evidence to indicate that the . S.I.S. might still be active on , New Zealand campuses. He had received assurances ; from the Prime Minister (Mr ( Rowling) that the S.I.S. was [ not involved on campuses, j but, because of the recent concern of students, Mr ; Dunne said, he had again i written to Mr Rowling, ask- i ing for further confirmation h of this assurance, and was I awaiting a reply. ’
