Thar, sewer problems not related

There is no relationship between the rising bed level of the North Ashburton River, about 10 miles above the town, and the sewage problems in Ashburton caused by the high water table, according to the Ashburton Borough Engineer (Mr W. J. (Bevis). Mr Bevis was replying to a correspondent of “The i Press.” He said that the rivet (dropped gravel when the bed changed to a more gentle gradient a few miles above town. This did not affect the high water table. The build-up of shingle was not caused by thar destroying vegetation, and there was some doubt whether there were any thar in the area anyway, Mr Bevis said. The chief engineer of the , South Canterbury Catchment and Regional Water Board : (Mr T. L. Fancourt) said that : the high water tables, which ■ caused infiltration into the ; sewers, were a reflection of : the climate. “The water table : has been going up and down ■ like a yo-yo with the recent . heavy rains,” he said.
