Move to reinstate officer
The Civil Defence Committee yesterday considered petitions seeking the reinstatement of the former Defence Officer, Mr R. W. Waters. No such request had been received from Mr Waters himself, and he had been given an undertaking that the matter would not he discussed publicly, the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr H. G. Hay) said yesterday. Mr Hav said that the vacancy for a Civil Defence 'Officer in no way made the | Civil Defence organisation I ineffective, and an appointment would be made as soon as possible after applications closed on October 22. The committee hoped that volunteers thinking of resigning would consider that it was in the public interest for them to continue their voluntary service. It also hoped that they would accept that matters of policy were the reponsibility of the committee which had an over-all view of the organisation not available to specialist volunteers, Mr Hay said.
