Fewer firearm permits
Fewer people are being given firearm permits as a result of new regulations introduced on July 1.
Constable W. C. Miller, of! the Christchurch arms office, said the number of firearm permits issued throughout the country had dropped about three times since the regulations were introduced. About 400 permits had been issued in Christchurch since July. The regulations were designed to keep firearms out of the hands of the wrong people, he said “We found that a lot of, people who were applying for permits before were not being exactly truthful. The: new regulations make it much more difficult. "Now we get in contact' with an applicant’s employer, a close relative and an’ mdependant referee, whereas before we just checked our' files to see if he had a crim-) inal record.” Constable Miller said there were often people who thought an applicant was too unstable to have a firearm. Anyone with a clean record, and considered to be stable, would have nothing to fear.
