Export of coal to Japan
Sir, — The questions of (your correspondent. “Perplexed” deserve answers. New Zealand used to produce tits own metallurgical coke in Christchurch (Smokeless (Fuels. Ltd), from the same I coal type as that found at (Mount Davy. However, Smokeless Fuels, Ltd, closed (because its main coal source, the Paparoa Mine, was shut down. We now have to import the coke we need from| Australia as there is no plant: manufacturing metallurgical! coke’in New Zealand. When this company was operating here it produced 400 tons of; (coke a month. With present requirements New Zealand, (could support a similar-sized, plant using Mount Davy coal. Its logical situation would be on the West Coast. However, the future of Mount Davy] depends on whether the Government is more con-i cerned with guaranteeing the| long-term regional develop-i ment of the West Coast or (with improving the short--term economic situation. — (Yours, etc., ROD DONALD. !
