New port for Coast advocated

(From Our Own Reporter) DUNEDIN, October 2. An all-weather deep sea port on the West Coast would be the greatest single factor in its development. said Mr B. J. Dalliessi (Blenheim) at the South Island Local Bodies’ Association conference today. “The Government’s regional development plan for the West Coast is falling down,” he said. “In the past year, the population has declined by 2 per cent, yet the West Coast has massive bulk resources that must be handled in bulk. An expert study should show where the port should be located.” Mr W. J. Mumm (Buller County) said that a S4m dredge was proposed, and if this figure was added to the cost of upgrading the railway to take Mount (Davy coal to Canterbury, the ’millions of dollars could be 'better spent on a new port. Mr B A. Ferguson (Golden Bay) said that when the beech scheme got under way it would not necessarily need a port on the West Coast. Lyttelton, Picton or Nelson might be preferable.
