Subsidy a ‘windfall’ for clinic

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 2. The increase in Government subsidies to private hospitals was described as a windfall to the Auckland abortion clinic today. This will help to pay off mortgages on the Aotea Hospital, which was recently bought for the clinic. Now that it runs a private hospital, the clinic qualifies for the subsidy of $l2 a day paid by the Government to all private hospital patients. Mr R. C. Clough, a member of the trust board, said today that he did not think the increased fee would result immediately in reduced charges for abortions. The trust board, and its members individually, had entered into “enormous commitments” to buy the hospital. He thought the board would use the extra money to clear these commitments more quickly, and then would certainly consider substantial reductions in fees for patients. '
