Valuable meat contract
(N.Z.P.A. Staff Crspdt) LONDON, Oct. 1. A contract for lamb cuts expected to be worth SNZ2.9m at retail level has been agreed between a major British supermarket chain, and two New Zealand meat companies. Announcing the completion of negotiations, the managing director of Towers and Co., Ltd (Mr John Buxton) said in London that the joint contract with the New Zealand Refrigerating Company was believed to be the “most significant firm undertaking” for lamb cuts arranged in the United Kingdom by New Zealand firms. The cuts, which would be processed at the Smithfield (London) plant of the New Zealand Refrigerating, Co., would be sold throughout Britain in Waitrose Supermarkets. The order culminated three years of experiments carried out with Waitrose to ensure shelf life was preserved through to the customer. The initial contract — for a year — will start with the new season’s supplies in late December or early January.
