i (y.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) 1 SYDNEY, i I Yesterday was a proud occasion for veteran Sydney race- , goers who cheered on the cham- ■ pion. Phar Lap, 43 years ago. ! Memories of the horse with i’a heart as big as himself were revived with the arrival from the L'nlted States of the neadstone that had marked his' 1 .'alit'ornia grave. The pink granite stone, i veighing 551 b, was brought to! Sydney by Mrs Beverley) iittner. whose parents own at arm near Phar Lap’s American i paddock. She believes arsenic spray used on the farm could have .aused Phar Lap’s death in 1932. Mrs Bittner felt it appropriate .hat the great horse’s headstone •hould stay in Australia. The headstone will be pre tented to A.J.C. chairman, Mr Tim Carr, just before the start if the Metropolitan at Randwick text Monday. It will be buried on the Rand ’ vick course with a plaque outining the horse’s achievements., Phar Lap was the 1930 Mel>ourne Cup winner with a huge, ! veight. and at odds of 11-to-8 j >n. he is still the shortest-priced; 1 avourlte ever to have won the.
