Board to run terminal
Container terminal facilities at the Port of Lyttelton will be managed by the Lyttelton Harbour Board, the board decided yesterday, despite Government wishes that a company similar to Container Terminals, Ltd, of Wellington, be involved.
The board chairman (Mr J. Brand) said the decision was in the best interest of Canterbury, because the board’s interests covered consumers as well as shipping lines. An offer of consultative services from Container Terminals, Ltd, had been accepted, Mr Brand added. The board would investigate how much additional staff would be needed to run the container.terminal, which should be operational by March, 1977. “We’re quite confident it will be successful," Mr Brand said. Although talks had been held with shipping lines on their possible involvement, “we did not ask the lines to come in with us,” Mr Brand said. “They haven’t indicated that they would at any stage of it."
Mr Brand noted that the Auckland Harbour Board ran its own container facilities.
