Woman dies in fire

An elderly woman died, and her husband was taken to Christchurch Hospital suffering from shock, after fire gutted the front part of their house in Estuary Road, South New Brighton, at 7 a.m. yesterday. The woman was VIOLET RUBY BUTTERWORTH, aged 84, of 368 Estuary Road. Her husband. Charles Edward Butterworth, aged 85, was reported to be in a fairly comfortable condition in hospital last evening. Mr Butterworth was carried from the house by a neighbour. Mr G. K. Gearry, who had noticed the fire, and kicked a door of the house in before the fire brigade arrived. Mrs Butterworth was trapped in a bedroom by the flames, and was dead by the time firemen reached her.
