Doctor surrenders

Guiseppe Carpinella. the chief medical officer of the southern Italian province of Avellino, where 18 newborn babies have died in an outbreak of salmonella poisoning, is now in prison on charges connected with the epidemic. The police say that Carpinella, gave himself up at Poggioreale Prison, Naples, two days after a warrant had been issued for his arrest. Two fellow-doctors had been detained earlier.—Naples.
