Refusal of visas
Sir, — White South Africa's refusal of visas to a New Zealand television news team is cleverly excused. An unwillingness to become involved in our election is a commendable sentiment. But first it has to be established that the proposed apartheid Rugby tour is an election issue. That is for New Zealanders, not South Africans, to decide. And if it becomes one, then we should be able to find the facts behind it, and white South Africa is interfering by denying us these facts. The present visit to Africa is costly, and it is unlikely that TVI can repeat it. After November people are on holiday, television loses interest in current affairs, and anyway there would be no Rugby — white or non-racial — in the offseason to film in South Africa. The postponement of visas is a clever way of minimising the chances of any television coverage of sport. — Yours, etc., A. J. CAMPBELL. September 30, 1975.
