Community work proposal

School leavers are being encouraged by the Christchurch Rotary clubs to join a voluntary organisation to develop interests outside their careers, in conununity service. A member of the Rotary youth committee (Mr C. Fenwick) said society was depriving youth of responsibility, and some degree of achievement, because businesses today were large and there was little room for individuality.

He said this was where community service or team activities could benefit. The challenges and responsibility accepted by the members would in turn help the community. The Rotary club has designed a broadsheet listing various organisations, including volunteer fire fighters, Civil Defence, Naval Volunteer Reserve, Search and Rescue, Red Cross, Toe H and Rotaract.

The pamphlet is designed for school leavers interested in selecting a hobby. 5000 pamphlets have been issued to 25 Christchurch schools and some organisations have been invited to speak on the activities involved.
