Overtime review urged on Govt
(New Zealand Prexx Association) WELLINGTON, September 26. The Government would be well advised to review overtime in the Ministry of Works, said the Opposition spokesman on irrigation, Mr R. L. G. Talbot (South Canterbury) today.
“The nation-wide ban on overtime imposed recently by the Ministry is another sign of the Government’s economic mismanagement,” Mr Talbot said. The Government was now forced to cut back on essential work which, had it been completed quickly, would not only have reduced costs but also would have built up productivity, Mr Talbot said.
He cited three cases where he considered this applied. A delay in urgent repairs to the upper Waitaki bridges between Kurow and Hakataramea would cost many thousands of dollars and a delay in land preparation for irrigation work meant many hundreds of acres not being prepared in time to produce this season, he said. The Waitaki power project, by being tied down to a 96-hour fortnight, ■ denied many of the work-force the right to work the longer
hours for which many of them went to Twizel, Mr Talbot said.
“Flexibility should be built! into the system to allow j essential productive work to! proceed with the utmost! speed.”
