Peace, not war
The Peacemaker. By C. S. Forester. Michael Joseph. 158 pp. N.Z. price $6.05.
Horatio Hornblower might not approve, but one of Mr Forester’s very earliest novels has been reissued. And the subject is peace, instead of getting on with the business of fighting the damned French. A meek mathematics teacher, afflicted with a drunken wife, tumbles on a discovery which can render cars, tanks and aircraft immobile. Under the spell of his headmaster’s lovely daughter—a "ban-the-bomber” of the 1930 s — he discovers love and sets out to impose peace on the world. The result is chaos in the centre of London as traffic comes to a sudden stop. But what begins as a comic novel ends in tragedy. From the earnest anti-war sentiment of 40 years ago. Mr Forester’s message is still clear today. Those who set out to save mankind from itself, no matter how well intentioned they are, end up misunderstood and causing more harm than good A delightful period piece by an old master which well deserves to be back in print.
