Valium may cause birth defects
(N Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Sept. 26. { Valium, Librium and other) tranquilisers taken during pregnancy may increase the risk of birth defects, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (F.D.A.), says in a warning it is preparing, United Press International reported. Valium is the most widely (prescribed drug in the United States. The Centre for Disease Control found in a study in the Atlanta area that babies with cleft lips were being born more frequently to women who had taken Valium during their pregnancy than to those who had not. The F.D.A. said it was) preparing a drug bulletin on' Valium, Librium, and tran-; q u i 1 i s e r s containing) meprobamate but it would! not be issued “any time! soon."
