Transatlantic bid
A West German shopkeeper, Mr Heinz-Juergen Sorge, aged 29, has set out in a bid to cross the Atlantic Ocean on perhaps the smallest craft imaginable — a surfboard. Mr Sorge, who is a surfboard salesman, hopes to reach New York in three weeks with the help of a 10 h.p. outboard motor. After weeks of training in the North Sea and the Baltic, he put out into the River Elbe in a force 8 to 9 wind. Undaunted by the 3647 nautical miles ahead of him, he plans to put in some 12 hours daily, resting meanwhile on the luxury yacht that will accompany him. —
