Hint of strike solution
OV.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Sept. 25.
The first hint of a solution to the Invercargill bus dispute came after a series of meetings in Wellington today. The dispute has been deadlocked for two weeks since Invercargill bus-drivers went on strike over the Invercargill City Council’s employment of two women contract cleaners.
.The City Council has a decision of the Industrial Court backing its stand.
The national executive of the Passenger Transport Workers’ Union met this morning, and later met the Minister of Labour (Mr Faulkner). A spokesman for Mr Faulkner’s office said further discussions were planned for tomorrow. Today’s national executive meeting delayed any decision to widen the dispute. The only reasonable solution to the dispute was for the parties to "get round the table” for talks on the problem, said the union’s secretary (Mr G. D. Turner).
No meeting of Christchurch drivers was planned to discuss the Invercargill dispute, said Mr K. A. Challender, the Christchurch secretary of the Tramway Workers’ Union. It was hoped to contain the strike to the Invercargill area, he said. The union was waiting on further developments from the Minister of Labour’s office.
