To stainless steel
By the end of 1977 all New Zealand dairy farmers are required to have stainless steel milking machines. The change has been made necessary because of the higher standards required for dairy exports by importing countries.
Mr J. C. Millward, dairy advisory officer (farms) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, said this week that a meeting was held last month among representatives of the Dairy Division of the Ministry, farmers and milking machinery firms to discuss the change. Problems associated with it had been dealt with and a programme for the Canterbury region organised. A survey would be made to assess the number of farmers who had yet. to install stainless steel milking equipment. This would enable milking machine companies to predict fanner requirements for stainless steel. Dairy fanners would also find out which components of their milking machines would need to be of stainless steel. Mr Millward said that the most formidable problem associated with the change would be the lack of milking machinery company manpower to install stainless steel milking machines. To ensure the December 31, 1977, target date being met, it was essential that fanners start ordering and installing stainless steel equipment now.
The cost of stainless steel could only increase, so that there would be a significant saving in purchasing stainless steel components now. Inquiries should be directed to the Ministiy of Agriculture and Fisheries.
