100 years ahead

What will the Waimakariri catchment be like in 100 years? Dr K. F. O’Connor, director of the Tussock Grasslands and Mountain Lands Institute, predicted last week that much of it would be in forest.

And he added that most of it would be production forest, rather than protection forest.

The forest would run up to the 4000 ft level. Above that, “if we are lucky,” there would be tussock. Dr O’Connor’s forecast probably sounded fairly optimistic to a party of Australian soil conservators who visited the catchment But one thing is certain, he will never know whether he is right or wrong, nor will any of those who travelled with him.
