The Red Cross Society’s Florence Nightingale Medal, the organisation’s highest award for a nurse or voluntary aid, was presented recently to Miss Ngaire Kirkpatrick Simpson, of Tauranga. She received the medal in recognition of her exceptional courage during two tours of duty in Vietnam.
The award is made by the international committee of the Red Cross and regulations provide for a maximum of 36 medals every two years. The secretary-general of the New Zealand Red Cross, Mr J. Talbot, said Miss Simpson served with the Government surgical team at Qui Nhon, Vietnam, during 1966 and 1967 and with the Fifth New Zealand Red Cross Welfare Team in Pleiku from 1973 to 1974. “During both her tours of duty, she accomplished her task with complete disregard for her personal safety in areas in which hostilities were much in evidence and impressed al! concerned with her exceptional courage, energy and devotion to duty,” Mr Talbot said.
