Pleasing trial by Kenann
/"The Press” Special Service) WELLINGTON. The Takanini stablemates, Kenann and Harttrick's Pride, showed that they had lost little of their first-day polish when they worked at Trentham yesterday with Tokyo Lad. Kennan and Tokyo Lad worked over 1600 m and were joined by Harttrick’s Pride for tire final 1000 m.
The pick-up was perfect and tlie trio raced to the 800 m mark in line. Tokyo Lad started to drop away at the top of the straight and at the line was six lengths and a half from Kenann, which was just shaded by Harttrick's Pride. The 1600 m took Kenann Imin 45.8 sec, the final 800 m 52sec and the last 600 m 38sec. All work was on the outside of the course proper which was firm. Times, though, were about 2sec slower than on Tuesday.
j Kenann and Harttrick's Pride ; could not have been more impressive. Kenann, the top-weight, I seems sure to be one of the favourites for the Abel Tasman Handicap, the first leg. in which lie will be ridden by Noel Harris. He has improved witli his stay at Trentham and should be almost at peak tomorrow. His trainer, Colin Cookslcy, said yesterday -that the New Zealand Cup in November was very much on the cards for the four-year-old, and before that there was every chance that Kenann would be back at Trentham next month.
Harttrick’s Pride, an impressive winner last Saturday, will also be a top chance. He wjll run in the First Lyall Handicap and because Harris is to ride Miss Dunraven, the colt will have a change of rider, Cooksley’s son. Grant, will have charge. Tokyo Lad has an engagement for tlie Port Nicholson Handicap. If lie runs, David Frethey will be the rider. SOUTHERN PAIR Grey Way had Bucenhall as a companion for a gallop of 1000 m. but neither was after time. Tlie 800 m took 52.65 cc. and the final 600 m 38.4 sec. The pair were together at the finish. Grey Way looks improved but will need firm ground to show his best.
The Karaka Steeple candidate, Dyak, was given a solid trial out on the course proper before he moved across to try iris luck on the steeples course. After working once around, be galloped from the 1600 m in Imin. 51sec, the first 800 m in 58.2scc and the final 600 m in 43.65 cc.
His race-day rider, Don Graham, then took him out into the oval and he jumped four fences without much conviction. He then tried a couple more, which he managed a little better.
Dark River, just beaten in the Whitby Hurdle on Saturday was not after time He galloped his final 800 m in a sedate 55.8 sec, the final 600 m in 40,8 sec. He looks solid and will be ridden tomorrow by Graham Mee. Glensyrc ran in from the 800 m in 53.65ec, but was a little quicker over the closing 600 m in 38.4 sec.
Test Match showed pace running her 800 m in 51.2 sec, the final 600 m in 38.2 sec and John’s Pal was even quicker over 800 m in 50.2 sec, the final 600 m in 37.2 see.
Mexicano worked steadily on the course proper. He finished his task with 800 m in 56.2 secs the final 600 m in 40.5scc. Chessington worked in from the 1200 m, running his final 800 m in 53.8 sec the final 600 in 39.6 sec. Chessington has engagements for three races, the Palliser Hurdle, the Karaka Steeples and the Abel Tasman Handicap, but yesterday his owner-trainer. Jack Ferguson, was uncertain about which race the gelding would run in.
Ferguson said he would like to run him in the Abel Tasman, but he needs five scratchings to get back into the field.
