New grades in cricket

The Canterbury Cricket Association's old cumbersome naming of its grades has gone with the venerable exception of the President’s grade. The C.C.A. management committee this week adopted a recommendation from the annual meeting which did away with Senior I, Senior 11, the second grade — with its four divisions — and so on. Grades will now be simply numbered first to tenth (or however many are required) and President’s. It also decided that the third grade would have longer hours than at present if there were sufficient entries. Clubs will be asked if they want a 10.45 a.m. start — as with first and second grades — or noon. A little surprisingly, the meeting also decided competitions should resume on January 10 in the New Year. Although this was a further recommendation from the annual meeting, there was a strong body of opinion favouring delaying the start until January 17.
